Correction (& slightly off Ciena subject): Yurie is not WDM but rather is ATM technology, but the point is the same, ergo, Lucent has given Yurie its seal of approval when it became an OEM'r ("Virtually" everyone has given Ciena their seal of approval; and Lucent & Cisco are working on WDM). In data networking, Cisco is dominant, so much so that it has become "the safe decision" (as was IBM in the 70s... "You won't get fired buying IBM"...).

"Costs" are not a major factor in this "mission critical" equipment area. And "costs" are not primarily the purchase amount but rather heavily weigh in on training, upgrading and compatibility with existing equipment.

POCI may well succeed assuming they have state of the art and/or next generation technology, but I took (or tried to take) a quick look at it. At $23 million with almost no revenue, this looks too much like many previous gambles I have taken. I'm just not in that game anymore. Besides, you could wait for them to get the seal of approval from a major and still make a lot of money.
