I had an experience like that when I was a teenager. I gave it a swift kick with the toe of my sleeping bag and then looked out to see what it was.

It was a porcupine.

Fortunately, I had a .44 magnum.

It was a National Forest, not a National Park. Firearms have never been prohibited in National Forests, except some campgrounds.
