Bush ending his public silence with pair of speeches 07:30 AM CDT on Friday, May 29, 2009 By LORI STAHL / The Dallas Morning News lstahl@dallasnews.com Former President George W. Bush may finally upstage Dick Cheney this week. After months of silence while Cheney has been blasting away at President Barack Obama, Bush is scheduled to make two semi-public appearances. Thursday, he spoke to the Economic Club of Southwest Michigan at Lake Michigan College in what had been billed as his first major speech to an American audience. The news media was allowed to attend the event but not record it. Today, Bush will join former President Bill Clinton at a joint appearance in Canada. The event will be hosted by a moderator. Both former presidents have appeared in Canada before, but not together. The event's organizer won't say how much the former world leaders are being paid, and neither will their spokesmen. Agencies that line up high-profile speakers have estimated about $150,000 each. Bush has been raising money to fund his foundation, which will build his presidential library at Southern Methodist University. His aides have said they've banked $100 million of the $300 million goal so far. Most of the money is apparently coming from small, private events. Bush has kept a relatively low profile since leaving office in January, especially compared with Cheney, who has made numerous TV appearances in recent weeks. dallasnews.com
