On tonight's news, Arnold was saying the state was going to have to roll back to the 90s services to meet the budget.

One of the biggest problems, which I mentioned a long time ago, is that the previous democratic governor, Grey Davis, hired 42,000 additional state workers when they weren't needed. That's more than the total number of employees at Boeing, the state's largest employer at the time. That's an additional legacy of health care and retirement for life.

I have a friend who's been a teacher and is retiring this June. Because she has 4 Master degrees, she qualifies for top retirement pay. She will retire with full pay at $95,000 a year and full health care benefits. She sees nothing wrong with this when I mention what other retirees get with SS.

The politicians focus on the schools and health care and say that's where the cuts are going to be to scare everyone.

I wonder how many of us could look at that budget and find all manner of bloat, fraud, waste and abuse. I'll bet you could give anyone one of us a week and we could cull out all the waste.

Here's one example: the Forest Service should give up their program that pays 16- to 21-year-olds for 6-9 months to "experience" the forest in the hopes they will choose a career in the Forest Service. They pay biologists, geologists, and other specialists to encourage these young people to choose a career in the Forest Service There's already a backlog of people trying to get in the Forest Service. That's just one example I know of. I have a nephew with a degree in forestry who can't get a job. I have a step-grandson who has qualified for the Forest Service's program.
