When I was in the position to do so, I was very generous with others. It was not uncommon for me to help strangers who were in need. I did it because I wanted to do it and hoped I'd make a difference. However, now I'm not in that same position, so I've cut back. We still live very well, but I don't feel the need to have all the things that many do. We drive good yet no frill cars, live in a comfortable yet older home, and conduct our spending in a sensible way. We are very happy and don't need all the extras. Hopefully there will be some good to come out of all this economic downturn. I would hope that the focus might turn to those things that really matter in life and not on being overly showy and the attempt to try and impress at the cost of debt.

I had an email from a friend who said he was depressed; he went on to say that he had friends and family that were suffering cutbacks in pay, etc.. I told him about a family member I just learned had breast and bladder cancer along with kidney problems. She recently was in the hospital for four months and lost seventy pounds. I told the man who sent me the email to tell those people who are suffering cutbacks to count their blessings. While no one wants to go through that, there is always something worse.
