We do get immigrants from economically sound countries. Obviously poorer (and closer) people like Mexicans are more likely to move here, but we have gotten a net flow of people towards us from Western Europe, from Japan etc., even if you only consider relatively recent times and leave out the previous times when they where not so rich (like the Irish Potato famine, Europe and Japan right after WWII etc.)
