Yes, it's all out war out there and the Devil take the hindmost. Plants have been killing or at least frightening other plants for a billion years and have become quite good at it. Then animals declared war on them and it has been carnage ever since with plants developing a more sophisticated chemical arsenal than humans have achieved. We still use the actual plant chemicals for most purposes though we make our own vitamin C in factories along with lots of other things we want in bulk. The point Lindy was making was that people think of "chemicals" as bad things because people make them, but that plant chemicals are the same thing [quality control issues aside]. Humans are carrying on that billion year carnage process as genes seek ascendancy. Because of human brain power, we have found that co-operative people get more gene success so the Jesus brotherhoood of Man philosophy grounded in intellectual processes including love has gained ground over the Islamic Jihad murderous maelstrom of dog eat dog. The USA is essentially an intellectual construction based on co-operation rather than the traditional human lifestyle of tribal politics from slaves/dinner at the bottom of the heap to the chief alpha male dominance hierarchy boss at the top. The brotherhood now has been extended to include women. As has been demonstrated, hordes of smart people co-operating including women [some of whom also have intelligence and should be treated as human even though they are missing a Y chromosome] is very powerful and successful. Success is not measured simply in numbers. Ants and bacteria are probably winning using that measure. Islamic Jihad has the numbers, but that's not victory any more, though it was a good start for 1000s of years. It's nice that Obama wants to be friendly with Islamic countries, but he should keep an armed guard. They are still operating on animal kingdom principles where hacking off Stan Shaw's head is seen as a good idea. They want absolute totalitarian rule with suppression of the individual into their theocracy. Sometimes as the burgeoning Big Brother democratic state kleptocratic suffocatocracy grows ever more intrusive, I wonder whether Islamic ideology is far behind and maybe even ahead in some respects. History is not finished yet. The next step is tradable citizenships and some sort of Federal UN. The USA should take the chance now available to lead the world towards a good design. It might be too late given the financial carnage going on in the USA now but maybe not - other places have their share too. Obama should forget about alternative fuels - that's so last century and I was working on them in the early 1980s. There are plenty of people to do it if it's economic, without having Obama dabbling. As Yeltsin said, presidents don't do chickens. Obama should get on with a federal global system and tradable citizenships, not chickens. Meanwhile, with Californians voting nyet, it will be interesting to see if even the USA federal system can last. The Feds have too much power. They need to be cut down to size. Mqurice
