As gasoline gets more expensive, people will seek out alternatives. You don't just hand the country over to fascists because of a reliance on outside resources. Those reliances are short-term, and can be handled by resourceful people. There is no true escape from fascism. You essentially have to burn the place down and start over again. It isn't something you want to play with.
