It's not a left-right issue with me, I met plenty of liberal foreign policy academics with little practical experience anywhere but lots of intellectual curiosity. I gave their views the same weight that I give to K.

Being well-traveled is crucial to understanding foreign policy as it is really practiced around the world. That's such a fundamental prerequisite that I don't see the need to debate it much. Are there any other professions where you don't actually need to carry out the profession's main activities before you become a senior analyst in the field?

We have discussed economists with little practical experience here at great length, my views there are consistent with FP issues.
