SS has expanded to support disability benefits of 100% for people who cannot work at anything (you would think this would be limited to quadriplegeics), but no, painters with bad backs are walking around collecting full benefits)and to support widows with children under 18 (the widow loses benefits when the kid turns 16---the kid loses their own benefits when they turn 18--or 19 if still in high school).

So it has assumed a lot more financial obligations beyond its original intent--which was to prevent old age poverty.
