I want a balanced approach. I don't want a far left socialist country, but I don't want the laissez faire greed fest that the GOP wants either. What I do want is a reasonable safety net that helps people get through hard times like this recession until we see a recovery. I also want a retirement safety net that is designed to be solvent and the proceeds of which CAN NOT be touched by Congress, except to be used to pay out the benefits. I also want the top 1% to pay more in taxes percentage-wise and in absolute dollars than the bottom 99%, because they have benefited most from this country, can manipulate the levers of power in this country to benefit themselves, and therefore, they owe more to the rest of us than the bottom 99%. In short, I want a centrist approach.

My immigrant grandmother came here, became a citizen, didn't work a day in her life and got 20 years worth of social security. All legal, but unbelievably unfair. What FDR did was force the US to stick a toe into civilization and not let the old and feeble starve. People like your grandmother are the essence of what the program was designed to do. Fairness has nothing to do with it. Real countries don't let folks starve. We can be a real country or a Republican designed self serving greed utopia. You choose....
