Japan zinc exports may rise 14%

Zinc exports from Japan may increase 14 per cent this year on demand from China, boosted by the country's 4 trillion yuan ($585 billion) stimulus programme, according to Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Japan's top producer.

Total exports may rise to 96,500 tonnes in 2009 from 84,500 tonnes last year, Mr Nobuyuki Nakamoto, general manager of zinc business department at Mitsui Mining, said.

Shipments to China may surge to 36,200 tonnes in 2009 from 8,900 tonnes last year, while exports to other destinations, including Taiwan and Indonesia, are expected to fall to 60,300 tonnes from 75,600 tonnes, he said. – Business Line
