I don't think that any politicians of any party can do much to help the economy. The best they could do is maintain an orderly society, protect individual rights, take care of national defence, etc. Instead, they brainwashed the public (and themselves) into believing that they can be effective at "fixing" the economy. All they can do is create more problems - and additional levels of unpredictability and uncertainty.

Amity Shlaes in "The Forgotten Man" shows how FDR's incessant meddling caused private capital to "go on strike" - because people gave up on trying to guess what would be the next arbitrary move by Washington. The book was published in 2007, but one can't help having a feeling that she is writing about the current situation.
