>>Why should my children not have cokes and chips like other normal kids? Why should they suffer?<<

For the same reason they can't have a Porsche... they are poor. We should make these luxury items by not allowing them to be the cheapest and most available foods in the market. The other day we were in the Discount Foods aisles for supplies for a school sports function. It is the cheapest place to buy nacho makings. My city's poorer citizens tend to shop there - I never shop there myself - but it dawned on me that if there were to be one of those Doomsday movies scenarios, and this was the only surviving grocery, I might be able to survive, but my blood pressure, blood sugar and lipids would be out of control.

I'd prefer a nutritionist selected welfare recipients food lists - support individual choice by having columns based upon ethic preferences. Waivers could be obtained to handle special medical needs. With computers, there is no reason why this couldn't be administered by codes for food categories using smart cards on the grocery store computers. "I'm sorry Ms. Jones your purchase of Cheezy Poofs is not covered".

There are going to be some foods that the government shouldn't supply. Empty calories for developing minds is as much abuse as letting the children suck on lead fishing weights. I don't care if Pappy or Mommy always let them do this. There is not much we can do about the cycle of poverty and low intelligence if we don't break the cycle using science and behavior modification. What people consider "normal" food is determined in childhood.

The lawyer I share office space with represents people who are having their children taken by the state, I hear some real horror stories.

Last week there was one client who had her kids taken cause she couldn't stay off the drugs and she let a sex offender move in with her ... judge says stay off the drugs for a year and give the sex offender the boot and I'll reconsider ... six months later the guy is living with her again, she's pregnant, and he's the father.

My friend Bill spends his mornings arguing on these peoples behalf with a straight face, I don't see how he does it.
