Your points are valid, and they don't contradict mine, really. The rise in gas prices last year was very rapid, but also short-lived. When (not if) gas prices go up and stay up, car companies will be very glad they have prepared by developing vehicles that get better mileage.

All of the different methods of increasing efficiency will have to be brought to bear, including reduction of weight.
