Just think of the business that is going to be picked up by the divorce lawyers. Half of heterosexual marriages go sour and a lawyer has a case. Now marriage may not be forever in the case of homosexual marriages either as human beings are just that. Fallible. The thing that I have always fought for that compatible with marriage ( and personally I don't care WHAT it is called as a name is just a name and can be called any thing.. like civil union, legal partners ) are the RIGHTS that are granted to those who are married. The ones that are most significant are joint taxes, pension plans of one spouse being continued to the other,social security being extended after death of partner,health insurance rights, health visitation rights and decisions regarding health care. Some right wingers believe that all of these can be attained by Trusts,Powers of Attorney etc, but they cannot. Absolutely cannot. I POA ceases at death. I know as I had one for my father. There are so many benefits of joint union choose to call it what you will. Heterosexuals have many many more benefits because of marriage..
