Hero Officer "Not Out Of The Woods Yet"
By Elizabeth Braun and Tom Murray

Story Created: May 28, 2009

Story Updated: May 29, 2009

He rescued a mother and toddler stuck on the train tracks. Now we're learning about how bad his injuries really are.

Officer John Krahn has been listed in satisfactory condition all week, but his injuries are far worse than initially realized.

Fellow officers knew immediately that the minivan- freight train collision seriously injured John Krahn. His fight to recover at Froedtert has been challenging.

"He's not out of the woods yet. Some complications have occurred, he had his third surgery this morning," says Assistant Elm Grove Police Chief Gus Moulas.

Krahn has fractures in his leg, shoulder and pelvis and cuts covering his body. His family released the following statement:

"Although John is listed in satisfactory condition because his injuries are not life threatening, his injuries are severe. John is in severe pain and has asked to not have any visitors at this time."

Officials from Canadian Pacific, the state patrol accident reconstruction team and Elm Grove investigators met Thursday, but did not exchange and data on the crash.

How fast was the train going when it came around the bend and when did the engineer hit the brakes? It may be weeks before anyone gets those answers.

There's been a fund set up for Officer Krahn. Donations in his name can be made at any M&I Bank location.

The father injured in the crash, Scott Partenfelder, remains in critical condition.
