They hitch a ride in your car. :) You might want to consider that a good many of the folks who want to see the US energy independent aren't also environmentalists. And if they are, they aren't your historical tree huggers. Most thinking, rationale Americans now realize that with peak oil and with enemies of the US controlling the oil supply, it's a good time to start diversifying away from oil. The only real question is why you are clinging to oil? Do you work for an oil company? Or do want to continue to see our enemies hold their oil weapon against us? Now to answer your question, the Volt will have a range of more than 300 miles, but will get a combine 100+ mpg. Tesla gets more than 200 miles and their Model S sedan will do the same. However, for the commuter cars, like the MiEV and Ford Focus electric that only get from 70-100 miles per charge, that will be a problem. Families will have to have a second car that has good range in addition to a commuter car. However, that shouldn't be a problem, since most families in America own two cars. Eventually, as battery tech improves or a new storage mechanism is found like super capacitors, the range problem will be solved.
