"When do they start sending letters? How old do you have to be?"

You might be able to use this site to get an estimate of your benefits.

I started getting them at about 40 I think. But, I really don't know.

Looks like you can request a letter:

But I didn't.

ted, you have to have had a job, a valid social security number, and be at least 25.

Why do I receive a Social Security Statement every year?

The Social Security Administration is required by law (P.L. 101-239, Sect. 10308) to send Statements automatically to eligible people:

* Who are age 25 or older;
* Have a Social Security number (SSN);
* Have any earnings on record;
* Are not receiving benefits, including Medicare;
* For whom we can obtain a current address; and
* Have not requested a Statement within the last 11 months.

So why are you not getting your automatic statements? Do tell!

Maybe someone has already stolen your identity, but who would want it?

Tonite I learned that we have troops not only in S. Korea but in Japan as well. 25k in S.Korea; 35k in Japan

Really? That is news to you?

Personally, I would not want to be stationed in Korea for love or money....especially with the piss ant dictator to the north pushing the envelope and ready, willing and able to test the nerve of a new admin that is perceived to be weak.

Fairly amazing admission on your part.

You must really still be in junior high school if you just learned we have troops in Japan and Korea. Blaming our global military for our economic woes is just plain foolish. If it wasnt for our global military, there would be 25,000 North Korean troops stationed in your backyard. Man not only was yours a dumb post but to advertise your ignorance like that is something only a child would do or someone with the emotional age of a child.

Ted, > We can't afford squat thanks to our global military.

We should eventually pull out of South Korea, but you might be surprised by how little we're going to save compared to what Social Security costs right now.

Its no wonder SS is only a pittance. We can't afford squat thanks to our global military.

More is spent on Social Security than the military, and SS is and has been increasing as a percentage of government spending for decades while military spending has greatly declined by the same measurement.
