there were some pretty bad environmental abuses perpetrated...

Mooseseseses, those "abuses" created the capital stock that allowed imperfect remediation among a vastly increased population enjoying a vastly improved material situation. They did the best they could with what they had then.

TR had admirable qualities. Familiarity with economic processes and progress was not included.
