Think about what happens if war breaks out and North Korea goes the way of Iraq. If China doesn't intervene, one of two things could happen:

1) America will withdraw, leaving China and South Korea to clean up the mess.

2) America will remain like they did in Iraq recently and Japan decades ago, and they'll have a strategic outpost parked right on China's doorstep.

These issues could all be resolved via complex diplomacy, but maintaining the status quo continues to be too viable of an option.
