If US, SK and Japan push too hard in eyes of NK, what will they do? I am thinking they can march to Seoul or at minimum bomb and shell the hell out of that city. Ultimately they will be beaten back with enormous casualties on their side but high civilian death count both sides. US 30K troops at great risk. Is that about right or do you have another take.
Parsons wants all South Koreans to move to Falklands with the Jews. I think he wants the Tamil Tigers there as well.

Tench,

1) America will withdraw, leaving China and South Korea to clean up the mess.

I was trying to explore the scenario that China does not get involved at all (not even in the clean-up). Would China really mind a stable South Korea winning, taking over? That would mean the stability on the border and the US troops out eventually.

2) America will remain like they did in Iraq recently and Japan decades ago, and they'll have a strategic outpost parked right on China's doorstep.

I don't think China is necessarily afraid of any land-based neighbor. China is, IMO, a stronger competitor as a land based neighbor than sea + air power.

Suppose there are 2 generals. One is a US general roaming in NK countryside in an active conflict, fighting a guerilla war. Second is a Chinese general with million men army sitting on the China-NK border. Which general do you think would be more nervous?

All I am saying is that if NK starts a confrontation, China may just as well let things play themselves out without their intervention, without bailing out NK.

Joe
