Michael, > Is there a racial component involved here. Are NK more closely tied to chinese in that way. I know in vietnam there were ethnic diffencnces between north and south.

There are some ethnic differences between North and South Koreans, but they are rather minor. My wife's family actually escaped the North during the Korean War, so that makes them ethnic Northerners in a sense. You could say they're more closely tied to China, but it's a lot more complex and nuanced than that.

Most historians agree that the 38th parallel was drawn entirely by foreigners. South Koreans continue to identify themselves with all of Korea, not such the southern half. Even the national anthem of South Korea mentions Baekdu Mountain, which is actually located in North Korea (more specifically the border between North Korea and China).
