I don't think the judges try to tee off the parties exactly. The reality is that the hallmark of a good settlement is that both parties are a little unhappy. Having been a mediator, as well as counsel for participants in settlements, I know that to be true:-) While family law matters don't always resolve through settlement, the court has to somehow split the baby, so to speak, and it's seldom an easy task.

That's why I've never handled matrimonial cases.

I'd rather have a root canal.:-)
