Hey, in the cosmicforce universe, there will be some people that will freak out and play the incest card saying this invites sexual abuse or talk about people marrying their goat That, IMO, is a straw man concern. It is like the pedophile or pederast argument against homosexuals, which is already addressed by the law. Adult incest (or bestiality, as far as that goes) doesn't concern me in the least. I doubt people will be lining up to "partner" their sister unless there is a tax benefit. Someone who is already doing that isn't going to be encouraged by a change in the law. Everything that is immoral or indecent doesn't need to be against the law. You don't have to give a birthday present to someone who has given one to you for the last 70 years. One would be a douche not to but there shouldn't be a law.

We should look at marriage that way and say "all or none" for partnerships/unions. I'm married and I'm actually willing to give it as a government approved institution. Newly married people might have to rewrite their will though to assure survivorship benefits for their wife. Presumably if they died intestate or with an obsolete will their kids would be the nominal heirs. Wives prior to the date of "no unions" would probably be grandfathered in the law.

My wife and I pay a marriage penalty because of AMT - we look richer when we file together. They'd be doing us a tax favor by dumping the legal status of the institution.
