1. Gorbachev and his wife were graduates/doctorates of the U. of Moscow. Unlike his predecessors who came from the less educated farming communities, the Gorbachevs were members of the Russian intelligentia. 2. Being part of the intelligentia, Gorbachev started the perestroika movement. He didn't do so because of Reagan's insistence (pure American propaganda). This movement stated from within Russia. 3. The perestroika was disliked by the old guard and hence they "kidnapped" Gorbachev for a few weeks and send him into exile. 4. The Russian tanks that overflowed were commanded by Generals whose kids were in the civilian crowds that challenged them along with politburo member Boris Yeltsin who led the resistance. The Soviet generals refused to fire into the crowds because they had their relatives and friends in there. 5. The people's resistance did not succeed in China because the Chinese leadership learnt from the mistakes of the Soviets. To quell the post-Tiananmen uprising, the Chinese leadership moved in troops from the countryside thereby ensuring that they had no relatives in the crowds that they were ordered to fire on. Had nothing to do with Reagan or the US The US needs to be credited for carrying out their their own peaceful revolution through the ballot box in Nov. 2008.
