I have to agree with your conclusion. Many things still carry a social stigma although legal.

On the spot correction of people "in your face" also works. However, many of these jerks want to do things "in your face" and have you arrested for physical intervention.

Gosh
I should have read your post first
this:

". generally what keeps a society civil is the unwillingness of the citizens to tolerate an uncivil society."

\is all I care about

What people do in private is none of my concern (aside from hurting others and children)- my only wish is that people try to avoid doing whatever it is they do in front of me. Oddly enough it seems to be the people who scream loudest about aberrant sexual stuff who are most likely to rent it and enjoy it. One sees it so often with the ministers of TV- who get caught pooping on prostitutes, or swinging, or doing goodness knows what else (which of course matters not to me in the least- it's the hypocrisy that bothers me.)

If people just relaxed a little more, and didn't worry so much what other people were up to sexually, and concentrated more on being fabulous in public, the world would be a happier and more pleasant place. Although it just occurred to me that concern with one's neighbor's sexual habits may in itself involve sexual pleasure for some...although surely they could be concerned privately? Thus pleasing themselves and the rest of us- unless it is necessary to have a group for such pleasure.

I think probably this is an area that requires research...

Perhaps people fear that which they feel tempted by, and they wish external controls to keep them from doing it? I can't think of anything that tempts me which would subject me to opprobrium (save I guess from a rather non-judgmental bent). Perhaps that's why I do not fear what other people do. I'm not tempted to do anything society would consider "wrong". But I do feel for people who think they are so tempted- and I would like things redefined so "wrongness" was more logical, and included things that are truly harmful- like the abuse of children, or the intentional harming of other people and animals. I think to lose focus, and label many things harmful, which in fact do little harm, is a distraction from the things that truly do ruin lives in our society. But hey, that's just me and my ideas.
