According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), pipelines are the safest method of transporting petroleum and natural gas. While there are in excess of 100 deaths per year associated with electric transmission lines, according to the DOT's Office of Pipeline Safety in 2001, there were 2 deaths associated with transmission pipelines, and 5 deaths associated with distribution systems.>
