I saw Yeltsin on TV standing on a tank during that showdown. The Russian people were not out in the streets demanding freedom. Its only because the Russian troops and commanders themselves refused to overthrow the government that communism fell. There were more Chinese in the streets during the Tiananmen incidents than Russians during that period. It wasn't the Russian masses which caused the downfall. Sure, it wasn't Reagan alone responsible for the fall, but he did play a role in challenging the Gorbachev to go further and further.
