We are bounded only by the limitations we set for ourselves when it comes to political direction and movement. Conservation of valued constructs and institutions is a worthy cause. Conservative lifestyles have kept the core family concept going, which is the basis of community and consequential to society. However archaic or obsolete traditions are stagnating to a destructive degree. Liberal ideas are also essential when considering innovation and renewal for a rapidly changing global culture. But change just for the sake of shedding the discomfort of responsibility leads to chaos. Being stuck at the extreme end of conservative thought or liberal idealism is self limiting and hardly beneficial to anyone.

The fact that much of the base continued to vote for Republican candidates despite the large scale move away from conservative principles on important issues by Bush and many, probably a majority of Republicans in congress, suggest that only a small part of the GOP bases has been zealous and rigid.
