Today is the first day that anyone entering the U.S. by automobile must have a valid passport or similar document – and that includes Canadians entering the U.S. as well as Americans returning home. It’s a post 9-11 rule that’s been years in the making, delayed twice by Congress, aimed at curbing illegal entry of unsavory people. Few problems were reported Monday as U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents began enforcing the new requirement. But with the prospect so well publicized, and agents allowing the benefit of the doubt, no major problems were expected.
