NEW YORK -- Crude futures were little changed Tuesday, as a rally built on the prospect of an economic recovery later this year sputtered on the weak state of current oil demand.

Light, sweet crude for July delivery settled 3 cents lower at $68.55 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The slight decline snapped a streak of six consecutive gains. July Brent crude on the ICE futures exchange settled 20 cents, or 0.3%, higher at $68.17 a barrel.

Futures are approaching the psychologically important $70 a barrel, a price many analysts have predicted would only be hit once the U.S. economy began to pull out of recession, and even then not until the end of the year. Saudi Arabia's oil minister also predicted last week that prices could hit $75 a barrel this year.

Although oil prices have doubled since February, long, unbroken moves higher have been rare, as futures have risen despite plentiful supplies and only intermittent evidence that a recovery is in progress. On Tuesday, oil prices had traded as low as $67.50 a barrel before an increase in an index measuring pending home sales helped prop up the market.
