My take is as follows.

Saddam was a paper tiger. Israel felt that their security was being threatened because of Saddam's increasing nuclear capability. And the US at that time was looking for a morale booster after 9/11.

So the planners decided on a swift operation to take Saddam out similar to Desert Storm. The plan misfired in that they had not planned for Al Qaeda to follow them into Iraq and take them on.

And that is when the US found themselves involved deeply in a situation that they had not planned for.
