They've somehow got this one through - almost: Enbridge Energy pipeline projects near final approval could create jobs for 3,000 union workers in Wisconsin and Minnesota this summer. Environmental permits for the Alberta Clipper and Southern Lights pipelines could be finalized next week and construction is tentatively set for August, Enbridge spokeswoman Denise Hamsher said. Contractors will begin hiring as soon as next month, working through the Operating Engineers, Pipefitters, Laborers and Teamsters union halls, Hamsher said. The Alberta Clipper line will stretch 1,000 miles from the Alberta oil sands in Canada to Superior. It’s expected to begin service next year, carrying 450,000 barrels of crude oil. The Southern Lights pipeline will cover nearly 700 miles from Chicago, through Superior to Clearbrook, Minn. It will carry light hydrocarbons, a surplus product from U.S. refineries, to Alberta, where it is used to dilute the oil-sands crude, making it easier to transport.
