Its been said of both advertising and medical care that half of what's spent is waste but that we don't know what half.

LOL! Don't know about advertising, but medical care is easier to figure out. Think about a simplest situation - you bring a sick child to a Doc, who takes care of him, and you pay the required quantity of dollars, or a couple of dozen eggs, or whatever the deal may be. Want to find waste - look beyond the basic situation, into the complexities. That's where it resides.

Some complexities lead towards simplicity. Having a person's medical history, allergies, medications etc readily available - on the Net, or on a chip, whichever works better - is an example. It makes life simpler, and probably cuts down on mistakes. Otoh, Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospitals micromanaging every minute detail is an example of getting little - if any, imo - return for the costs involved.
