I have worked with Oncology clinics that participate heavily in clinical trials. And while I'm not familiar with the details, I do know that they are highly controlled studies requiring research people at the clinical level to be carefully trained on the processes, qualifications, etc. I think they do a good job and have rather extensive facilities for categorizing and reporting results; frankly, when first exposed to this I was astonished at how well-organized they are.

I don't know about clinical trials outside of Oncology practice, as I can't say I've really seen them.
