In the end it comes down to the series efficiency to do just about any "work". Plants, algae just won't cut it in the end with our energy demands on the planet.

We need electrons folks and lots of them! Burning fuels is not a solution to a 21st century energy problem. It worked in the 19th century but our energy demands today and into the future are just too great.
