and mgmt allowed the unions to get away with murder.. The unions were holding them at gunpoint. It is legalized extortion, and reasonable people could have taken the action the automakers' management teams took. But over the decades, the unions brought the companies down. The UAW thinks it has "won" in this mess, but they will continue to be a drag on the automakers until their collapse. Which, unfortunately, may be at the same time the US collapses since that's when the money will be run out.
