The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, October 28, edition that Placer
Dome yesterday acquired a two year exclusive right to investigate the
potential of Bema Gold's and Arizona Star Resources' Aldebaran property in
northern Chile for US$60 million. The Globe's Allan Robinson writes that
Bema and Arizona Star have been looking for a senior partner capable of
taking on what could turn into a gigantic development. The two junior
miners are already looking at the possibility of constructing a $1.3
billion gold and copper mine at the Cerro Casale deposit at Alderbaran but
Placer Dome appears particularly interested in exploring other sites.
Placer Dome said it's a very low entry cost given the area's potential. If
things go as planned, Placer Dome would end up with a 51 per cent interest
in Aldebaran. Bema president Clive Johnson described it as a sensible deal
in a difficult market. Placer Dome views Aldebaran as a new exploration
area capable of hosting huge copper and gold deposits.
