Jack; If you can back up your files with a zip/jaz/tape, do it and then format the drive. If you used any compression program (microsoft or ??) do not use compression on your drive again, it inevitably ends up doing this sort of thing.
The other thing is to get the latest Norton disk doctor and see what it can do. If you do not know how to use it get a friend who knows.
I assume you have an operational anti virus program, and it has passed your system as OK.

microsoft problem.

run chkdsk from dos.

buy some crystallex.

you probably have cross linked files and a bad sector.

You will have to get rid of those files, after looking at them.

run scandisk agin.

always back up to zipdrive or tape before defrag.

buy a 4 gige scsi fast and ultra with video capability

Norton Utilities may be your only way out.
