All the states you compare CA to are much lower cost states with the exception of NY and Alaska. In fact, there is no other state like CA in the Union. NY comes closest and even then, falls short.

New York and Alaska are higher than CA, but its hard to find any other state where the total is higher. I thought it would be in Hawaii but it isn't.

CA is a very high cost state, as is NY and I think Alaska. That seems like more than a coincidence.
