LBJ didn't send them; the drafts boards did. Well, technically he did, but it was the draft. Us white kids hid out in school with 2S deferments, went to Canada or Sweden, did alternative service, or got creative like the Republicans listed below. Blacks didn't try and hide from the draft board like we did. Didn't get teach-ins at college telling them about the draft. Didn't have docs to say they had cysts on their butts. Didn't have the smarts that Cheney had, getting married when they stopped deferring single guys and convincing Lynn to pop out Da Liz exactly 9 months after hubbies were no longer exempt, but daddies still were. Poor, uneducated, without a lawyer folks, doing what they thought was the right thing for their country. The government wouldn't lie, would it?
The chickenhawks April 29, 8:11 PM · It has become a mainstay of American political discourse to hear right-wing Republicans and other so-called conservatives refer to people who profess a peaceful solution to the world's conflicts and an end to others (like Iraq), as Anti-American and anti-military. What I have uncovered has however been an eye-opener, in terms of revealing just how many of these avid war proponents have never served in the U.S. Military. Some, like the famed spokesperson for the prescription drug industry, Rush Limbaugh, even had medical reasons - he had a pilonidal cyst or more or less a "pain in the proverbial posterior" (which would explain his antecedents and unbecoming proclivities), while Michael Medved conveniently enrolled in Yale Law School after winning a generous fellowship, while teaching 7th and 8th grade three hours a day to earn an 'occupational deferment' with the Vietnam era Selective Service. Medved also served as co-chair of the Vietnam Moratorium anti-war demonstration!
You really could not make this all up even if you tried, but it is rather troubling that time and again, these Republican chickenhawks brave the unmitigated gall and temerity to challenge the patriosm of others, while the records show they are nothing short of the most artful of draft dodgers.

Commentary:
It is refreshing to know that our 43rd President spent his time defending Alabama with the National Guard and as for his disappearance from duty, well that would not be a suprise as he seemed to do that quite a bit for 8 excruciating years.
Conservative commentators like Laura Ingraham are quick to point at the lack of articulation of core conservative values as the main reason for the seeming "demise" of the Republican party, I beg to differ, it is the glaring lack of shame and unbecoming hypocrisy of the right, the fringe right in particular that has driven independents like myself and others away from the party of Lincoln. We do not particularly like people urinating on us and then telling us it's raining. It is indeed true that it is easier to see far ahead than that which is right underneath one's nose. That, I am afraid, typifies the so-called conservative movement. examiner.com

Why did the Bush campaign smear him so in 2000? At least Senators Cleland (D-GA), Kerry (D-MA), Kerrey (D-NE), Robb (D-VA) and Hagel (R-NE) defended him.
Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert - avoided the draft, did not serve. Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey - avoided the draft, did not serve. Former Speaker Newt Gingrich - avoided the draft, did not serve (1, 2) Former President Ronald Reagan - due to poor eyesight, served in a noncombat role making movies for the Army in southern California during WWII. What are we to make of Powell? On the one hand, a long career as a military manager. On the other hand, accused of covering up the My Lai massacre. Back on that first hand, one of the seemingly sane voices in this administration when it comes to Iraq (or at least he used to be). On the other hand, a clear hypocrite ("I am angry that so many of the sons of the powerful and well-placed... managed to wangle slots in Reserve and National Guard units...") Representative Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD), served in USMC in Vietnam; wounded in action.
