Riding down one is definately preferable to jumping! lol funny story...a couple of years ago my next youngest was making his first solo trip down the river...when we came to the first falls (only about 5 feet, far cry from that one!) i asked him if he was going over or around. He was drinking a vanilla coke, which is his favorite drink, and the last one we had. He said he was goiing for it...I went first so I would be waiting on him at the bottom. I watch him come over, and of course he rolls, and is pretty much submerged, when i suddenly see a hand sticking up out of the water, with the vanilla coke safe and sound. I'll never forget that visual, and we always laugh about his "save".
