Take the symbols. Discover rules how they interact. Have a menu of formulas. Transform them into a body of knowledge. Manipulate them electronically. The numbers are there but you don't need them. Do you need to know hexadecimal to 'pilot' your PC? No. Why? Meet the interface. The interface isolate you form the numbers. Just point and click. The biggest discoveries which made we skyrocket were made by illiterate people. Did fire need numbers to be discovered. Certainly the wheel was invented after algebra.
