I was born on the west (Seattle area) and lived for some time in Portland. It took awhile to adapt to the dry east, but I've come to love the area as well.

I like the list of books on Egans read list.

A guy that has done a lot, a lot on long these lines, if you like adventure at all....:)

------------------------

JOHN ROSKELLEY: Author and photographer, John
Roskelley, is considered one of the world’s top Himalayan climbers and
adventurers. He has spent 41 years climbing throughout the world,
successfully reaching the summit of four 8,000-meter peaks, including
the two highest, Everest and K2. John’s forte is climbing extreme rock
and ice routes at high altitude and has set the bar worldwide with
ascents of Uli Biaho in Pakistan in 1979, and Tawoche in Nepal in 1989,
neither of which have been repeated.
John grew up in Spokane, where he learned to hunt, fish and enjoy the
great outdoors with his father, Fenton Roskelley, who was the Outdoor
Editor or contributor for the local paper for 60 years. Yes, that number
is correct. John started climbing at the age of 16 after joining the
Spokane Mountaineers. He attended Washington State University after
high school and received a B.S. in Geology in 1971. In 1972, he married
Joyce Roskelley and is the proud father of three great kids.
John has written three adventure books and many articles for national
magazines. His photography has appeared on the cover of National
Geographic, numerous book and catalog covers, advertisements and
posters. He worked for E. I. DuPont for 13 years and W. L. Gore and
Associates for 12 years. In 1995, John ran for Spokane County
Commissioner and filled that position until October 2004, when he was
appointed by Governor Locke to the Eastern Washington Growth
Management Hearings Board. His most recent significant
mountaineering achievement was reaching the summit of Mount
Everest on May 21, 2003, with Jess, who at age 20 was at the time the
youngest American to reach the summit of the highest mountain on
earth.
