Was the Republican party of Lincoln liberal? The emancipation movement which contributed a plank to the then Republican party platform was pushed by northern evangelical Christians. A lot of today's evangelical Christians see abortion as a similar issue - to be opposed on moral grounds. Republicans were also the party of big business which in those days meant the railroads. Lincoln himself had made a living as a lawyer/lobbyist for the railroads and his administration saw the passage of laws that gave away vast sums of land to the railroads to fund their building a transcontinental railroad. nytimes.com Lets see - evangelical Christians + big business.
