I put them in the same category as that young woman who stood in front of a bulldozer in Israel until it ran over her. What did she expect?

After helping to exacerbate an international incident, they will be welcomed back to the west as heroes.

Either that, or they will help build one of the best darn railroads in Asia over the next twelve years.

NK has a history of kidnapping South Koreans and Japanese (probably Japanese of ethnic Korean ancestry - such folks are a significant minority in Japan) and spiriting them into NK. The regime has gone so far as kidnapping S Korean movie and tv stars to play in productions for Kim's entertainment.

The two women recently abducted were of ethnic Korean ancestry so may have regarded as fair game by the NK govt.

The North Korean abductions of Japanese citizens from Japan by agents of the North Korean government happened during a period of six years from 1977 to 1983. Although only sixteen (8 men and 8 women) are officially recognized by the Japanese government, there may have been as many as 70 to 80 Japanese abducted.[1]
....
North Korea has also perpetrated abductions in South Korea, which has the highest number of citizens abducted by the North. The number of South Korean abductees is put at 486[24] or 485.[25].

It was probably unwise to assign ethnic Korean reporters to cover a story near the NK'ean border. Caucasians or ethnic Chinese would be much less likely abduction targets.

It shouldn't be presumed the two reporters crossed the border voluntarily. They were likely just close to the border. And the two women certainly weren't there alone covering a story. They were probably just the only ethnic Koreans present. Where are the camera people and guides? I'd guess they were likely ethnic Chinese and weren't abducted.

Both NK and China are looking for ways to test the Obama adm - here come two Americans of Korean background. Wouldn't surprise me if Chinese intelligence tipped NK'an intelligence.
