Re: "The MAIN thing with the Pakistani campaign is that the military there seems to be finally working WITH the locals."

There was NO WAY we could have ever had any kind of lasting 'success' in AFGHANISTAN so long as the Taleban had rest, aid, resupply, sanctuary and succor right next door in Pakistan.

To the extent that the Pak. citizenry have finally awakened to the realization that the Taleban were *never* 'benign' for Pakistan, that they were and are in fact a viper that was allowed to grow unfettered through Pakistani society; and to the extent that the Pak. military and Intelligence Services have come to realize that running the Taleban as their 'sock-puppet', as a low-cost means of force projection for Pakistan against their regional rivals has seriously COMPROMISED their national security, not improved it... to that extent these developments are very encouraging indeed.

They could represent the first signs of light (and increasing odds for strategic success) in many decades.
