At least that’s what you’d think by scanning today’s headlines. Doug Palmer’s June 8th Reuters piece Obama speeds projects to create, save 600,000 jobs, takes the President’s bait hook, line and sinker: “President Barack Obama said on Monday that accelerated stimulus spending would create or save 600,000 jobs over the next 100 days,” Palmer wrote before parroting White House claims that the spending will quickly lead to new economic activity at national parks, veterans centers and Superfund sites from coast to coast. He then goes on to include five quotes from Obama and Vice President Biden, while only including one recycled quote from Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell. Mark Silva’s June 8th LA Times is just as bad, providing a basic rewrite of the White House’s announcement and including three Obama and Biden quotes vs. one from McConnell. At no point does either article point out that stimulus spending was already scheduled to accelerate this summer nor do they question whether it’s even possible to measure the White House’s new and arbitrary metric of created or “saved” jobs. Palmer or Silva could learn a thing or two from the AP’s Brett Blackledge and Matt Apuzzo. Their June 9th article Obama’s new ‘accelerated’ recovery plan is neither new nor accelerated correctly reports: <<< Obama promised Monday to ramp up spending from the $787 billion stimulus fund and create or save 600,000 jobs by the end of the summer. It was an effort to shift the focus away from persistently rising unemployment and beat back criticism that the money isn’t flowing quickly enough. Those promises aren’t new. Stimulus spending had always been expected to rise sharply this summer, and the White House has been predicting that 600,000 job total for about a month. >>> nrinstitute.org
