>>I do not see it - there is no shortage of natural gas in the lower 48<<

That's exactly what I've been saying since last summer. But Exxon can still cut a deal to work with TransCanada on the current feasibility study, with no firm commitments to proceed with actual construction. Despite the recent drilling announcement, Palin still has the ultimate cotnrol of Point Thomson tied up in court*, so right now she can use that as a bargaining chip with Exxon. She could claim political credit for a deal now, even though the actual pipeline is still much in doubt.

The acid test comes next summer when both competing pipeline projects hold open seasons to take bids from customers for long-term gas contracts. The pipeline to the lower 48 cannot proceed without sufficient customer demand, but an in-state pipeline with an LNG export terminal at Valdez might look more attractive now because of projected global demand.

Palin sounds conciliatory note at Exxon lunch; hails project launch, local hiring

ExxonMobil has resumed drilling at Point Thomson after many years, and Gov. Sarah Palin actually had some words of praise in early June for a company she has jabbed from time to time.

But these developments mask the continuing feisty legal struggle between the oil titan and the state over ultimate control of the enormous Point Thomson oil and gas field, located on state land some 60 miles east of Prudhoe Bay.
